Youth Insights
Tackling the NEET challenge.
Young people who aren’t in employment, education, or training are often called NEETs. This issue affects a significant number of 16 to 21-year-olds, with up to a third experiencing a long-term period of being a NEET.
Employability is influenced by a mix of personal, network, and labour market factors. Two key contributors to prolonged limited employment are:
Soft skills, like communication and teamwork, which are vital for job success but need nurturing from an early age.
Work experience, which improves employability but is often missing for those leaving school with few qualifications.
To enhance youth employability, it is crucial to understand effective interventions, moving beyond short-term transitions to longer, integrated programmes. A broader focus on employability factors such as work experience and soft skills is essential along with unpacking contributing factors such as employment barriers.
