Key MTFJ Project in Hutt City

The Mayor’s Taskforce is delivered by local Community Organisation YOUth INSPIRE in partnership with Hutt City Council.

Since March 2014 YOUth INPSIRE has worked with Hutt City Council, local businesses, central government, funders, and educational providers to ensure our young people are engaged in employment, education, or training. YOUth INSPIRE operate offices in Taita and Wainuiomata, where we service communities with high Rangatahi unemployment.

A Social Return of Investment (SROI) conducted in 2017 provided an understanding of the social and economic value generated by supporting Rangatahi into jobs, training and further education. The SROI demonstrates that, for every $1 invested in YOUth INSPIRE, there is a $11.60 return on investment.

YOUth INSPIRE run the following programmes:

  1. Youth Employability Programme (YEP): YEP is a 14 week course, designed to respond to business and industry requirements for young people to develop the employability skills needed to succeed in the workplace. YEP provides learning activities to build these seven competencies:
  • Positive Attitude
  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Self-management
  • Willingness to Learn
  • Thinking skills (problem solving and decision making)
  • Resilience

The young people apply these classroom learnings in their Work Experience placements. Local businesses provide authentic work experience where young people can learn new skills, be part of a team, and introduce them to the world of work.

Another important aspect of the programme is encouraging our young people to be connected to their community. Each group engage in a volunteer project that will directly enhance their community.

  1. Road Ready Rangatahi Driving School responds to the national problem of young people without a driver licence and the barrier this presents to their job prospects. YOUth INSPIRE run Learner Licence courses, Restricted and Full Driver Licence programmes. Local community volunteer driving mentors dedicate hours teaching our Rangatahi safe driving skills.

YOUth INSPIRE provide full wrap-around support and pastoral care of our young people. When working with us, young people feel valued, gain skills, and find confidence in themselves. They also develop leadership skills and provide role-modelling to their peers. We build high-trust relationships with young people, their whanau, employers and the community. Our network of business partners number in the hundreds and include Hutt Valley District Health Board, Downer Group, and Pak’nSave. We encourage our business partners to take a leading role for the future of our local workforce.
